Teavana

Tea and accessories business, Teavana was acquired by Starbucks at a price of $620 million on December 31, 2012. The retail chain started in 1997 specializes in brewed and packaged loose-leaf tea, tea accessories and related products. After Starbucks acquired it in 2012, the fast-growing retail chain had expanded to 379 retail locations in 2017. Later Starbucks decided to close the Teavana retail stores and instead chose to sell loose-leaf teas and tea-related products under the Teavana brand in Starbucks physical stores as well as online. 

La Boulange

The San Francisco based bakery chain was reportedly acquired at $100 million9 on 4th June, 2012. The owner of the bakery chain, Bay Bread Group, was bought by Starbucks so that it could increase its menu offerings. In the case of La Boulange too Starbucks closed its initial plan of opening the La Boulange chain in 400 locations nationwide and shifted to selling La Boulange products in its own retail shops.

Evolution Fresh

The manufacturer of bottled fruit juices was purchased at a price of $30 million on November 10, 2011 by the coffee giant. Evolution fresh specializes in manufacturing bottled fruit juices, vegetable and fruit juice blends. Founded by Jimmy Rosenberg, the Evolution Fresh products today are sold at Starbucks locations and other grocery stores and retailers. Starbucks had opened a handful of Evolution Fresh stores in some locations but closed it in 2017 and today it sells the products through Starbucks.  

Seattle Coffee Co.

The packaged and brewed coffee brand was acquired on 14th July, 2003 by Starbucks at an acquisition price of $72 million from AFC Enterprises Inc., the owners of Popeyes Chicken. To hold their stand against popular and cheaper brands McDonalds, etc which sell coffee at low rates, Starbucks bought Seattle’s Best brewed coffee to market it as a less expensive, mass-market coffee brand compared with the expensive Starbucks brand.

Ethos Water

Reportedly at a price of $8 million, Ethos bottled water was Starbucks’ on April 11, 2005. It is the most unique acquisition by the brand so far. Ethos Water established in 2001 is a subsidiary of Starbucks made to raise awareness about water access issues for people in developing countries. The company funds charitable grants for people working in settling the water problems worldwide by sharing five cents from each bottle of Ethos Water to the Ethos Water Fund. The fund has already shared over $12.3 million in grants to countries facing water issues.
